Mai Vang runs for Sacramento City Council for District 8
Sacramento City Council for District 8 Larry Carr is stepping aside. This creates an opportunity for a new council member to fill the seat. Mai Vang wants to be in that seat and has raised a good amount of money to help her on the way there.
Mai Vang is a Hmong refugee living in Sacramento with her family. She is the oldest of 16 children and learned leadership skills from her grandfather. She believes that anything is possible when people support each other.
“There’s this idea of collectivism, that no one does anything alone,” Vang said. “I learned what community is, and what hard work is, from the Hmong community.”
Mai Vang helped found Hmong Innovating Politics, which has pushed Sacramento and Fresno to provide voting ballots in the Hmong language.
She also teaches classes on Asian-American studies at both Sacramento State University and UC Davis. Mai Vang’s experience also includes working 4 years in City Hall as the community affairs director of Larry Carr before being elected in 2016 as the Sacramento City Unified School District Trustee.
Mai Vang has raised $104,000 so far and is endorsed by Larry Carr, fellow Sacramento City Unified trustees, council members Angelique Ashby, Jeff Harris, Allen Warren, and many other state officials.
