Fresno Senator Appoints California’s First Hmong Chief Of Staff – Shery Yang
California state senator Melissa Hurtado has appointed the first Hmong chief of staff at the Capitol, Shery Yang.
Shery Yang will be in charge of directing, coordinating and supervising operations of the senator’s office, both daily and long term.
Shery Yang said her appointment shows that Hurtado wants to give a voice to underrepresented communities.
“That’s why joining Sen. Hurtado’s team as the first Hmong chief of staff in the State Capitol is not only an opportunity to provide a fresh perspective but also to demonstrate that further diverse representation is needed in California,” said Shery Yang.
Shery Yang and her family fled the Secret War in Laos, and settled in California in the 1980s. She grew up in the Yuba and Fresno Counties. She’s the first in her family to graduate from a four-year college with a bachelor’s in government.
